FEBRURARY UNEMPLOYMENT RATE REMAINS UNCHANGED AT 4.6%

Walkerton, ON (March 11, 2022) – In February, the unemployment rate for the Stratford-Bruce Peninsula Economic Region remained unchanged at 4.6%, the second lowest in Ontario. Similarly, the provincial unemployment rate remained the same as last month at 6.1%, both unadjusted for seasonality.

Overall net employment in the region increased by 700, with full-time losses (-500) and part-time gains (+1,200).

The number of Goods-producing sector employees increased by net 700. The main driving force came from gains in Agriculture (+700) and Construction (+900) even though Manufacturing experienced another month of losses (-1,200).

Employment in the Services-producing sector remained unchanged. However, Health care and social assistance continued experiencing losses (-2,000). The gains in Wholesale and retail trade (+1,600) and other sectors exactly offset the losses, which resulted in zero net gains.

“We continue to develop ways to help job seekers gain the skills employers need to fill vacancies locally.” says Gemma Mendez-Smith, Executive Director of the Four County

Labour Market Planning Board.
