May 2018 – Local Unemployment Rate Falls In May

Walkerton, ON (May 11, 2018) – The unemployment rate for the Stratford-Bruce Peninsula Economic Region fell in April by 0.5 percentage points to 4.4%, a result of 1,700 people leaving the labour market. At the same time, the provincial unemployment rate in April was unchanged at 5.7%.
In April, employment in the Stratford-Bruce Peninsula Economic Region declined by 600, due to losses in both full-time (-400) and part-time work (-200).
In Goods-producing sector, employment fell by 1,200 in the Stratford-Bruce Peninsula Economic Region in April. Declines were spread across a number of industries, including Construction (-1,800), Agriculture (-800), and Utilities (-600). Despite the declines, employment in Manufacturing grew by 2,000 in April.
Employment in Services-producing sector rose by 500 in the Stratford-Bruce Peninsula Economic Region in April. A number of Services-producing industries recorded employment gains: Transportation and warehousing (+700), Professional, scientific and technical services (+700), Other services (except public administration) (+600), and Public administration (+400). At the same time, employment fell in Health care and social assistance (-1,700) and Finance, insurance, real estate, rental and leasing (-500).
On a positive note for the area, the Government of Ontario is partnering with Britespan Building Systems Inc., Fabric Building Covers International Inc. and Superheat FGH Technologies Inc. to create 35 new jobs in Huron and Bruce counties.
