Self-contained labour areas (SLAs) are functional areas composed of census subdivisions (sometimes known as municipalities or townships) outside of CMAs and CAs, grouped according to commuting patterns derived from data on place of work from the Census Program. SLA data helps to improve the availability and accessibility of labour market data in rural areas such as ours and acknowledges the diversity of economic regions by providing more granular data at smaller geographies.

Three labour market indicators are collected at the SLA-level:

  • Unemployment rate
  • Employment rate
  • Employment
