June 2019 – Local Unemployment Rate Decreases In May

Walkerton, ON (June 07, 2019) – In May, the unemployment rate for the Stratford-Bruce Peninsula Economic Region decreased by 1.2 percentage points to 4.7%. The provincial
unemployment rate decreased by 0.1 percentage points to 5.9%.

Employment increased by 8,600 in the region, with both full-time (+5,900) and part-time (+2,700) gains.

The number of Goods-producing sector employees decreased by 100 in the Stratford-Bruce Peninsula Economic Region. The greatest gains were in Agriculture (+900) and Construction
(+800).

Employment in the Services-producing sector increased by 8,800. The greatest gains were in Accommodation and food services (+2,600) and Educational services (+1,900).

Favourable news for the region’s economy includes: MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) between Pier Donnini and the Town of Saugeen Shores outlines intentions for development at
the former Station Property on the Port Elgin’s Main Beach. Plans will incorporate a food and banquet facility. A new budding business in Goderich – Birch Creek Greenhouse offers home grown plants and arrangements.
