July 2019 – Local Unemployment Rate Decreases in June

Walkerton, ON (July 5, 2019) – In June, the unemployment rate for the Stratford-Bruce Peninsula Economic Region decreased by 1.3 percentage points to 3.4%. The provincial unemployment rate decreased by 0.3 percentage points to 5.6%. Employment increased by 8,500 in the region with both full-time (+7,000) and part-time (+1,400) gains.

The number of Goods-producing sector employees decreased by 1,200 in the Stratford-Bruce Peninsula Economic Region. The greatest losses were in Manufacturing (-1,100) and Agriculture (-400).

Employment in the Services-producing sector increased by 9,600. The greatest gains were in Accommodation and food services (+2,400), Wholesale and retail trade (+2,100) and Healthcare and social assistance (+2,100).

News for the region’s economy includes: Dashwood Industries will be moving out of Huron County to Adelaide Metcalfe west of London, moving 140 jobs to the new location later this year. The Lighthouse Restaurant in Southampton has expanded and is reopening. Abraflex Limited in Paisley will be doubling the size of its current facility, with plans to increase its current workforce of 21 employees.
