Walkerton, ON (November 8, 2019) – In October, the unemployment rate for the Stratford-Bruce Peninsula Economic Region decreased considerably by 1.1 percentage points, to 3.1% continuing to occupy the lowest unemployment rate in the province. The provincial unemployment rate saw a decrease of 0.4 percentage points to 5.4%. Overall employment in the region increased by 1,900 with both full-time gains (+100) and part-time gains (+1,800). The number of Goods-producing sector employees increased by 1,100 in the Stratford-Bruce Peninsula Economic Region. The greatest gains were in Manufacturing (+500) and Utilities (+400). Employment in the Services-producing sector increased by 700. The greatest gains were in Professional, scientific and technical services (+1,000) and Wholesale and retail trade (+600). These gains were offset by highest losses in Educational services (-1,000). News for the region’s economy includes: In Goderich, the Comfort Inn has opened, and in Saugeen Shores, a new childcare centre has opened with plans to hire 25 employees. In Owen Sound, the Sydenham Innovation Campus has opened as a regional business and training centre. In association with the Bruce Power MCR project, Globotech and KEPCO both opened offices in Saugeen Shores. NPX in Kincardine is expanding to a second office location, and TetraTech Canada is also expanding its local presence with new office space in Kincardine.
